10 Must-See Godzilla Films

6. Godzilla Vs. King Ghidorah (1991)

Of all the Godzilla movies to feature the three-headed golden scaled dragon King Ghidorah, perhaps the best of those is Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, but not for the reasons you might think. Yes, King Ghidorah does prominently feature into the story, but this film is special for other reasons. Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is a great film because it offers us our first look at the origins of Godzilla. The plot involves time travelers from the future who want to save Japan by eliminating Godzilla completely, and to do this they have to go back to before he was enhanced with radiation from the atomic bomb testings. It is revealed that Godzilla used to be a dinosaur; a sole surviving Godzillasaurus on Lagos Island. By removing the dinosaur from the island before the bomb testings, Godzilla will be removed from history. Obviously things don't go according to plan. Despite falling into the same logical failings all time travel plots do, the story is very engaging and interesting. Godzilla comes back even bigger and meaner than before, and he goes on a rampage of epic proportions. This film features a clever role reversal, in which Godzilla goes from needed savior to unwanted villain just from a simple change in circumstances. It is Godzilla at his finest; a creature of his own agency who only cooperates with us when our goals just happen to align. And in the middle of this origin story is his arch nemesis, who gets to come back as a cyborg! So with lots of monster action and an intriguing sci-fi origin story, Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah is definitely one of the finest films in the series.
