10 Must-See Godzilla Films

5. Godzilla: Final Wars (2004)

Godzilla: Final Wars is one of the most polarizing films in the franchise. Some love it while others hate it. It was meant not only as the closing of the Millennium series of films, but as a 50th birthday celebration. A huge number of monsters were brought in for the occasion, including the Tristar American Godzilla. By far the most insane film in Godzilla's filmography; Final Wars is about the Earth Defense Force, which utilizes mutant humans with heightened physical capabilities, and their attempts to stop aliens from taking over the world. When the aliens take control of all Earth's monsters and use them to destroy our major cities, the EDF are forced to awaken their mortal enemy Godzilla. One of the most amusing aspects of this film is the ease in which Godzilla dispenses his foes. He absolutely demolishes them, to the point where the monster sequences can be criticized for being too short. While this is true, there are a lot of them, and they are so fast paced and energetic that they never stop entertaining. Godzilla is at his most powerful here; literally treated like a god among monsters, which allows for some amazing lines. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1Y7ODRjzCM In between all this are over the top kung fu sequences, an amazingly bad performance by former MMA Don Frye, and some of the best action scenes of the series to date. The whole movie gives off the vibe of a wacky party where everyone is on hallucinogens and having a good time celebrating Godzilla. It's crazy, it's fast, it makes no sense, but boy is it a fun time. It has its faults, but you got to love Final Wars for what it is: a celebration of Godzilla's 50th anniversary, thus earning its place as an important milestone in the franchise.
