10 Mysterious Sci-Fi Films That Gave Nothing Away

4. Cube

Mr Nobody Jared Leto
Trimark Pictures

Cube follows a group of people who find themselves in a colossal labyrinth which contains thousands of rooms, half of which are booby-trapped. Only one room leads to the exit.

As the characters navigate through the monstrous maze, they try not to lose their lives as well as their sanity. Throughout their journey, the characters (and the audience) try to understand their unique predicament. Who built the cube? Who put the prisoners in there? Why? Is it aliens? Could it be a government experiment? Perhaps it is a simulation?

When you learn what the cube-shaped labyrinth is, the answer is so anti-climatic, you think to yourself, "That can't be it. There has to be something else." As the story continues, you're waiting for another big reveal... and there isn't one. Upon the first watch, a lot of viewers are disappointed that there is no big explanation on the origin of the cube.

But that's the point! It's human nature to cook up grand conspiracies to understand uncertainty and justify tragedy when the reality is much more mundane. Although the sequel and prequel give more insight behind the maze's origin, it's better to ignore them because those movies kinda suck.
