10 New Year's Resolutions For 2013's Biggest Movie Characters

9. To Consider Retirement - Ray Owens (The Last Stand)

Being old and Austrian doesn't stop Ray Owens from being a damn good small town sheriff, especially since most of the time his job entails drinking coffee and discussing the monotony of rural life - but the narrative of The Last Stand ensured some violent excitement came to find him. Instead of leaping to the challenge, Owens accepts the responsibility with a world weary sigh, which seems to last the entirety of the movie. Quite frankly he's too old for this sh*t, but even more disturbingly, he's still far and away the best police officer for miles around. He outdoes the FBI and elite SWAT teams who all fail to even keep up with the villain, who Owens simply grabs by the scruff of the neck and leads into custody - with only a few scratches to show for it. The best thing for Ray in these autumn years would be to retire and find a hobby. He could maybe stay on in a training capacity to help his woefully under-qualified deputies but the fact he's in charge leads me to believe he's to blame for this in the first place. His time as a hotshot drug cop LA made him long for the quiet life, perhaps law enforcement isn't really the best way to achieve this.
