10 New Year's Resolutions For 2013's Biggest Movie Characters

3. To Remember He's Being Played By Will Smith - Cypher Raige (After Earth)

Cypher Raige is a complete charisma vacuum, speaking in an awkward accent and seemingly unaware of how facial expressions work. These flaws would have been almost been forgivable if it weren't for the fact that he spends the majority of After Earth sitting and lecturing his whiny son. Here we have a character who's seemingly forgot that he is being played by one of the most entertaining actors of this generation, Will Smith. When Shyamalan and Will decided to hastily throw out a star vehicle for young Jaiden, no one could have predicted that this deal with the devil would sacrifice the Fresh Prince's innate likeability. Granted Raige is a one dimensional character and his resolution could be to find a hobby or something to make himself more interesting but I believe the most glaring flaw is his lack of Big Willie Style. His entire presence within the narrative is either to sit still and be injured or be an arguably terrible parent. Neither of these traits encapsulate the man playing the role and quite frankly the whole thing is difficult to watch. If by some cruel twist of fate we can expect a sequel to this cinematic land fill I can only hope that Cypher Raige learns his lesson because come on, with a ridiculous name like that it must be hard to stay serious all the time.
