10 Niggling Worries Over Marvel's Next 10 Movies

9. Will The Comic Tone Undermine The Story? - Thor: Ragnarok

Thor Ragnarok Too Funny
Marvel Studios

From an objective viewpoint, Marvel were smart to bring talented New Zealand filmmaker Taika Waititi into the MCU. He's one of the best directors working the industry today, having produced two recent indie classics in What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Waititi is the director of the forthcoming Thor: Ragnarok, of course, and at first he feels like the ideal fit. That is until you realise that Ragnarok is dealing with some pretty heavy themes. You know, themes like "mass genocide," given that Asgard as we know it is set to be blown to smithereens.

But the trailer offers up a glimpse of a Thor movie with a lot of comedy on the go, which appears to jar somewhat with the relatively brutal story. I mean, we've got an entire city being blown up, but Thor is still finding time to quip over a seminal '70s rock song. Then there's the fact that the Waititi himself has promised nervous fans that the third instalment will, indeed, be "funny."

Now, this concern really only stems from the studio's choice of director and the trailer, and there's no real evidence out there to suggest that Thor: Ragnarok won't also be an emotional rollercoaster. Still, it's a tad worrying that this Thor looks like it has the freewheeling tone of a Guardians of the Galaxy flick.
