It's a somewhat cynical worry, but it's a worry nonetheless. Simply put: Captain Marvel will mark the first female MCU solo entry to date, and it basically needs to succeed in order for Marvel to consider putting more of the same into production in the years thereafter. Captain Marvel isn't the best-known female superhero, either; she hasn't got the inherent appeal of better established characters like Wonder Woman or Catwoman. It might seem somewhat ridiculous in this day and age to suggest that a movie featuring a female superhero could flop (or perform unremarkably), but it happens, and the box office results from previous female superhero movies speak for themselves. But given that this is the MCU, Captain Marvel stands a far better chance - here's hoping that fans will make the effort to go see this entry in the canon, so that more female-led superhero films get made.
