10 Non-Christmas Films You Can TOTALLY Get Away With Watching This Festive Season

8. In Bruges

Iron Man 3 Mandarin Aldrich Killian
Focus Features

This 2008 dark comedy masterpiece stars Brendan Gleeson (Ken) and Colin Farrell (Ray) as two hitmen lying low in the city of Bruges after a job goes horribly wrong. Ken is overjoyed with getting to experience the historical city during the Christmas period whereas Ray is far from impressed, and instead contemplates his life choices as the severity of his crimes suddenly dawns upon him.

How to convince others: The city of Bruges looks beautiful during the Christmas season as snow covers the quaint market stalls in the bustling town square. There's also a heartfelt scene set within a church, multiple mentions of Christmas and the general feel of the film is somewhat reminiscent of the beginning to It's A Wonderful Life. Like George Bailey, Ray is overcome with depression and decides to take his own life during the Christmas season until his own guardian angel, Ken, manages to talk him out of it and sets him on a path of redemption and hope. As memorable and iconic as this film is, I'd maybe go with a different one if there are kids around.

I see my role at WhatCulture the same way my wife sees my role as a lover: I contribute in a very small way, my presence is barely noticeable and I’m not entirely sure if the laughter is at me or with me.
