10 Obscure Cult Horror Films

8. Blue Sunshine (1978)

05.02.2013blue Blue Sunshine is an awesome little horror movie that is growing in popularity with cult horror fans and is now getting the attention it richly deserves. Wildly offbeat, it will tickle your bones, Whether you be a horror movie fan or lover of cult curios. The main basis of the film is that a group of psychotic murderers have sprung up over the city. They have lost their hair as well. The reason behind this state of affairs is that they all took a form of LSD called 'Blue Sunshine' 10 years ago which has turned them into folically challenged, homicidal psychos. How can they be stopped? Everything in this film combines to make one fantastic whole. Again, not an especially gore filled movie Blue Sunshine relies on suspense and plot turns. It is more psychologically terrifying than 'look out who's behind you with an axe' scary. There is a bravura performance by Zalman King as Jerry Zipkin (the man who can save the day) and it serves as an excellent zeitgeist of the 1970s - the fashions, the music, the disco. Director Jeff Lieberman does a magnificent job on a very limited budget and it's a good piece of anti-hippie exploitation that would prefigure Reagan's war on drugs just a few years later. Check this one out, it's a very interesting piece of cinema.

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
