10 Obscure Sci-Fi Horror Movies You Need To Watch
1. Hardware
Post-apocalyptic movies tend to be very set in their ways when it comes to technology. You'll often find that when humanity survives past a nuclear war or asteroid collision, they lose all modern progress and revert to driving gasoline cars and competing in tribal warfare. But Hardware goes in an entirely different direction.
The movie takes place after a former soldier gifts his girlfriend a robot head from the desert. Soon, the machine comes to life, rebuilds itself and goes on a murderous rampage, attempting to execute every human being it can find. Naturally, the cold, unfeeling ruthlessness of the machine is terrifying, and it's brought to life with some incredible practical effects.
Overall, this film has a gorgeously dark visual style, as the combination of poorly-lit rooms with heat scanning images and that classic 90s robot eyeline effect blend perfectly. It makes the film seem rugged and dirty, certainly not what you'd normally expect from robots in the future.
While the story is very simple, that works in the film's favour, as the main attraction can rely on the dread and anxiety that this rampaging antagonist delivers.
