Tate Taylor's previous film, The Help, was a runaway hit despite not being a particularly good film, earning a Best Picture nomination (among 3 others) and even an Oscar win for Octavia Spencer's performance. All eyes are on Taylor, then, to see how many awards he can wring out of his upcoming James Brown biopic, Get On Up. Spencer and Viola Davis, who both starred in The Help and both earned Oscar nods as a result, are starring in the film, but most of the attention will be on young actor Chadwick Boseman, who plays an upstart James Brown in his formative years. Boseman impressed many last year with his performance as Jackie Robinson in 42, and he could very well become a breakout star as a result of this film. As with a lot of biopic movies, though, they end up going nowhere because they stick too closely to formula and leave out the incendiary dramatic elements for the sake of the remaining family members. Hopefully that won't be the case here.
