10 Offbeat And Frequently Silly Frankenstein Films
9. Frankenstein's Daughter (1958)
Victor Frankenstein's grandson Oliver is working as a lab assistant to the kindly and decent Professor Morton. When Morton is off doing his thing, Oliver is experimenting on Morton's niece Trudy. Initially these experiments just lead to a change in appearance for Trudy - who spouts comedy eyebrows and decaying buck teeth - and she wanders around a bit. But this is all practice for a female monster Oliver is constructing from dead body parts. The monster is a vicious apparition from hell who attacks anyone in her way. This is probably the funniest Frankenstein film ever made and it isn't meant to be funny. For all you lovers of 1950s B Movie Monster Schlock, Frankenstein's Daughter will tickle your funny bone. The film also happens to be a teen movie, so we get stupid songs and scenes of teenagers getting down to the new fangled Rock N Roll - the song 'Daddy Bird' is a particular highlight. The monster doesn't look particularly scary and Trudy's dodgy eyebrows and buck teeth are comedy gold. However, there are semi-effective gore parts where we see a dismembered hand and a bloke getting acid thrown on his face. Again, there is too much teen drama and not enough Monster, but as a time relic for horror fans, it is a must see.
My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
