As mentioned elsewhere on this list, many a horror film has started by showing that picture's sinister threat getting to work and doing what they do best - as in, putting on a show of their twisted abilities so that audiences have an idea of what to expect.

So, when 2015's Last Girl Standing opens with a deer mask-adorned killer butchering a group of generic young adults, that's very much what we've come to expect from such offerings. The only catch is, this Benjamin R. Moody-helmed feature actually has someone survive this encounter with the monstrous figure known only as the Hunter.

What Last Girl Standing does brilliantly, is rather than being a typical slasher or maybe even having the Hunter continue to chase down Akasha Villalobos' Camryn, it instead opts to bring something fresh and new to the world of horror. By that, the film actually becomes a character study of sorts, as it picks things up with Camryn four years later and spotlights here as a timid, paranoid figure dealing with PTSD as a result of seeing her friends murdered and she herself only just managing to get the best of the Hunter.
