10 Opening Movie Scenes Which Immediately Stunned Audiences

6. Avengers: Infinity War - Bye Bye, Loki (And Heimdall)

Want to let audiences know that their favourite heroes will not be safe when faced with the new baddest villain in town?

Quickly killing off two of the most recognisable names in a franchise should just about do it.

Everyone knew there was going to be a few big name casualties in the MCU ensemble extravaganza Avengers: Infinity War (2018) but we didn't really envisage those heroic sacrifices or tragic killings going down until the very end of the movie.

Oh, how wrong we were.

Right away, the mighty Thanos (Josh Brolin) showed us what he was all about as he and his 'children' laid waste to a ship full of Asgardians. But, he wasn't done there. After utterly destroying the Incredible Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), the 'Mad Titan' skewers Heimdall (Idris Elba) and strangles Loki (Tom Hiddleston) for daring to strike him down.

As far as openings go, this stunning first real encounter with Thanos ranks as one of the most distressing and shocking in modern movie history. It must be said, watching Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) realise his family had been dusted early on in Endgame (2019) was tough, but seeing Thor (Chris Hemsworth) have his brother and long-time pal stripped away from him floored us that little bit more.
