1. John Travolta - Forrest Gump (Forrest Gump)
Tom Hanks pulled off an incredibly difficult and somewhat questionable role when he played Forrest Gump in Forrest Gump, a character which found itself subjected to lots and lots of "is he retarded or not, then?" debates in the aftermath of the movie's release. You've probably got your own opinion on that matter, of course, but can you imagine how much worse that whole ordeal might have been had John Travolta taken the role instead, as was originally planned? Believe it or not, Travolta was the first choice for Gump, but turned it down, a decision he's not afraid to say he still regrets today. Don't get me wrong: I like John Travolta and think he's swell, but I don't know if he could pulled off this character. There's something about his acting style that makes me nervous about him playing somebody with... well, lesser brains. It could've easily been laughable.
