10 Original Cuts Of Horror Movies We'll Sadly Never See

3. Legion (William Peter Blatty's Original Cut of The Exorcist III)

To some, this is the holy grail of the horror genre.

After the colossal failure of The Exorcist II: The Heretic, the original film's scribe William Peter Blatty sought to course-correct the dying franchise and deliver his own follow-up to William Friedkin's masterpiece.

Blatty put himself in the director's chair this time, and aimed to make a more thought-provoking film that was light on bright green puke and heavy on theological terror, wanting to create a sense of unease in his audience as they engaged with a more engrossing narrative.

Sadly, the big-wigs at the studio got involved and demanded the film more closely resemble the original, even going so far as to force Blatty to include an exorcism scene in the film's climax. This ultimately lead to the film being re-cut and released as The Exorcist III, which is a fantastic film in its own right and deserves all the praise it has garnered, but Blatty's original vision seems infinitely more appealing and compelling.

There have been attempts over the years to fully reconstruct Legion as its own film, but most of the negatives are lost, which means we'll never see the film as Blatty truly intended.
