10 Oscar Winning Films That Are Actually Bad
9. Vice
Adam McKay crossed the line from esteemed comedy director (Talladega Nights, Step Brothers, The Other Guys) to critically successful dramedy director in 2015 with The Big Short; a landmark rehash of the 2008 Recession. The film was a frontrunner for Best Picture till Spotlight edged it out but regardless, had everyone excited for what McKay had coming next.
Vice; a biography of Vice President Dick Cheney chronicled how he became one of the most powerful people in the world. Originally titled Backseat (a much better title), the film on paper had all the workings of an Oscar worthy film, but those workings didn’t come together as all had hoped.
Christian Bale’s superb performance was accompanied by caricatures from Sam Rockwell and Amy Adams as well as poor writing that had maybe ten minutes of memorable dialogue. The story of Cheney was interesting, but a documentary about him would have probably been more informative. And more entertaining.
