7. Scarlett Johansson - Lost In Translation (2003)
The Role: Charlotte, a young college graduate and newlywed, is stranded in Tokyo while her husband is out taking photos of celebrities. After several sleepless nights, she finds a connection with famed actor Bob Harris (Bill Murray, who we all love) and the two build a strong friendship that helps both characters find their way.
Why It's Oscar Worthy: This might be unfair, seeing as Lost in Translation is my favorite film and I personally think it's perfect in every way, but Johansson's performance still is one of the more notable snubs of the 21st century. Johansson's Charlotte goes through many emotions, changes, and stages through Lost in Translation without even having that much dialogue. Being able to express as much as she did through body language is something that some actors with 30 years of experience cannot do, but Johansson churned out a near-flawless performance at the age of 17. If that doesn't deserve a nomination, I'm not sure what does.
