8. Oscar Isaac - Triple Frontier
Triple Frontier came and went with little to no word of mouth.
Unfortunate, because it featured a compelling story, proficient directing and five spectacular performances led by the always spectacular Oscar Isaac. Triple Frontier has Isaac front a pack of retired special forces agents who wish to ambush a drug lord and take his money for themselves.
The movie pits Isaac, Ben Affleck, Pedro Pascal, Garrett Hedlund and Charlie Hunnam as the veterans. The trouble with this entry wasn’t whether to add the movie, it was which of the five men stood out the most.
After dissection and contemplation the answer was conclusive. Isaac’s performance was soft, yet harsh; intense, yet reserved. He wasn’t what movies have shown special forces members to act like, he was what they most likely do.
Not every Oscar worthy performance has to be chock-full of tears and emotion; sometimes they can just be pointedly authentic. Triple Frontier is a “man’s man” movie, and a pretty great one at that, but add some quality performances and one that stands out, and you've got yourself one of the best action flicks of the year.
