The big mystery hanging over Guardians Of The Galaxy is that of Peter Quill's father, who we know is an alien, but that's about it. Certainly he'll be different to Quill's father in the comics, and that has given rise to a few different theories.

One of the most popular is that it'll be Adam Warlock who turns out to have fathered Star-Lord. Warlock is an extremely powerful character, in the comics one who becomes a member of the Guardians and, perhaps most crucially, plays a big part in defeating Thanos after he assembles the Infinity Gauntlet. What appears to be his cocoon appears at the end of Thor: The Dark World, in the possession of the Collector, and we see it broken open in Guardians Of The Galaxy's post-credits scene.

The main barrier of his inclusion in the film is that a large part of his power comes from the Soul Gem, which could be too similar to the use of the Mind Stone in the creation of Vision. This might mean changing a big part of the character's backstory to bring him to the screen, but, then again, so would having him be Star-Lord's dad.
