10 Outstandingly Beautiful Cinematic Single Frames
8. Gigantic Purple Joi - Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Say what you want about the sexual politics of Blade Runner 2049, it is a damn handsome film.
Denis Villeneuve is never one to skimp on his visuals (Sicario's dusk raid, anyone?) and, really, many moments from 2049 could be selected as artistic wonders of their own, but Ryan Gosling's K encountering a purple building-size hologram version of his AI girlfriend, Joi (Ana de Armas), takes the biscuit.
Though quite heavily laden with CGI, built around de Armas' performance, this is definitely no Transformers, and every pixel is used to maximum aesthetic appeal.
This frame expertly signifies the film's central thematic concern of man vs machine in full neon glory, contrasting its two halves of shiny but insubstantial consumer element and grey, bleak and moody underworld aesthetic that K makes his home.
