Oh, Tomorrowland. Brad Bird followed up his successful pivot to live-action, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, with this extremely promising sci-fi action film starring George Clooney.

Given that Tomorrowland was loosely based on Disney's own futuristic theme park land, they were tremendously invested in the film's success, and hyped it pre-release as the next big, mesmerising blockbuster adventure film with serious franchise potential.

Yet despite the marketing playing up the wonder of the titular alt-dimension, the final movie bizarrely focused its attention elsewhere, resulting in an undercooked, over-budgeted tentpole that received mixed reviews and grossed just $209 million against its eye-watering $200 million price tag.

Eight years later, Tomorrowland is basically just a dusty monument to a corporation's hubristic faith that a mega-budget blockbuster based on one of their own attractions would be easy box office gravy.

In fact, many only remember it for causing the cancellation of the since-resurrected third TRON film, as Disney's faith in expensive sci-fi films began to waver following Tomorrowland's failure.
