In the case of A Wrinkle in Time, Disney at least had the sense to give the adaptation of Madeleine L'Engle's beloved 1962 novel a more sensible budget in the $100-130 million arena.

With an all-star cast headed by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Michael Peña, Zach Galifianakis, and Chris Pine, the hype spoke for itself, not to mention that the movie was the first $100 million film ever directed by a Black woman, with the great Ava DuVernay taking the reins.

It's not an exaggeration to say that some box office analysts had this thing grossing $1 billion and becoming one of 2018's biggest box office hits, but then the reviews hit.

Indeed, A Wrinkle in Time received wildly mixed reviews and simply failed to inspire general audiences despite its seemingly broad appeal across demographics.

It was a tedious mess of a fantasy flick that basically had its financial lunch eaten by Black Panther - a project DuVernay was originally approached to direct - which released three weeks prior and was still dominating the box office.

DuVernay's film on the other hand made just $132.7 million, ensuring it was an easy flop. Just five years on, when was the last time anybody had much of anything to say about it?
