9. Before We Go

When he's not protecting the Earth from a host of increasingly implausible threats, Captain America likes to step behind the camera and have a stab at directing. Fortunately for Chris Evans, 2015's Before We Go has nary a blue sky-portal or robot army in sight, and for us audiences, it's an entertaining rom-com that packs a solid emotional punch. It's not perfect, but it works, and as a directorial debut it gives us a solid indication of where Evans' career may be headed once he hangs up the shield.

Before We Go is arguably the poster-child for 'overlooked' too - it didn't see a theatrical release in the UK, and was only screened in a limited capacity elsewhere before being relegated to the bowels of Netflix.

It's a shame, because while it's not perfect - the script relies heavily on convenience and the supporting cast is weak - the direction is spot on. The breezy, kinetic manner in which Evans shoots his dialogue is refreshing, and his on-screen charm works wonders when combined with co-star Alice Eve's confident, yet vulnerable demeanour - we totally get why she'd seek comfort in him.

The movie doesn't try anything ground-breaking or revolutionary, but everything it attempts, it attempts admirably. Before We Go won't go down as a classic or even a cult-classic, but it's entertaining, and serves as the start of a promising directorial career for Chris Evans.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
