10 Overlooked Positives Of Star Wars Prequel Trilogy
3. The Lightsaber Fights
Easily one of the biggest improvements the prequels made over the original trilogy was the lightsaber battles. Not to take away from the fight scenes in the originals, because they were ripe with meaning and emotion, but the duels we saw in the prequel trilogy took things who a whole new level.
While some argue that they're too overplayed, there is absolutely no denying how exciting and fun to watch they are. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon's fight against Darth Maul in Episode I is one of the few things that makes it truly feel like a Star Wars movie. It's fast, energetic, and shows a clash of fighting styles that mesh together to create incredible chemistry. It is the best scene in The Phantom Menace, bar none.
That, however, is just the tip of the iceberg.
The fight in Attack of the Clones excellently portrays Anakin's inexperience when pitted against a veteran such as Dooku, and shows just how truly dangerous a skilled lightsaber-wielder can be. A point driven home even further when Yoda enters the fray.
However, the magnum opus of lightsaber battles, not just in the prequels but arguably the saga as a whole, is Obi-Wan's duel with the newly named Darth Vader during the climax of Revenge of the Sith. It is a fight that is not only incredibe to watch, but also carries so much emotional weight. Every single thing that had happened in the prequels was building to this moment of teacher versus student, and it was a duel for the ages. No lightsaber fight before it had felt quite so raw, and the fact that it took place on a highly unstable lava planet certainly worked in the fight's favor.
Every single shortcoming of the prequels was made up for in that one scene.
