While, admittedly, most of the acting in the prequels felt rather off, Ewan McGregor's portrayal of Obi-Wan Kenobi was absolutely and undeniably brilliant. From his sarcasm, to his genuine care for others as well as his determination to try and keep the Jedi Order alive, he is easily on the the deepest and most developed characters in the trilogy. And it was McGregor's phenomenal skills as an actor and understanding of the character that made this portrayal such a success.

In his mannerisms, sense of humor, and motivation, McGregor plays the Jedi in such a way that we truly believe that this is the same man who will eventually become the mentor and spiritual guide for Luke Skywalker that we all know and love. He captures the essence of the late, great Alec Guinness to a perfect T, all while developing his own unique identity for the character. This is likely due to the fact that McGregor is a man who truly loves Star Wars, and wanted to give everything he had into his performance. To this day, over a decade now since the prequels concluded, he has kept a firm grasp on his lightsaber skills, simply because he enjoyed playing Obi-Wan so much.

Moreover, McGregor seems to grow with the character. From the snarky and skilled but inexperienced padawan to a seasoned Jedi knight, to the Jedi Master who would be forced to fight to what he presumed to be the bitter end against the boy he spent his entire adult life training, prequel Obi-Wan is given an incredible amount of development, and McGregor carried the character to unmatched success.

Ewan McGregor's take on Obi-Wan is absolutely flawless, plain and simple.
