8. It Tried Something Other Than 'Reboot And Reset'
In an age where rebooting something is the most common a Hollywood tactic when one or two movies go down badly, Superman Returns deserves some credit for trying to do something different. Singer intended the film as a loose sequel to Richard Donners Superman: The Movie and Donner/Richard Lesters Superman II, both of which are classics of the superhero genre. Rather than trying to reimagine DCs flagship character as a more modern superhero, Bryan Singer essentially used Superman Returns to ask what is Donner and Christopher Reeves Superman came back? What would the world think of him now? This has some interesting results. Perhaps most notably, Margot Kidders Lois Lane has grown into Kate Bosworth, got married, and decided that the world doesnt need Superman anymore. This, to me, seems like a far more interesting story to tell than rebooting the characters and resetting all the relationships. Superman Returns was far more imaginative than Man Of Steel's bland rebooting, in my books at least.
