10 Overlooked & Underappreciated 90s Action Movie Flicks

9. Top Dog (1995)

Tough And Deadly Roddy Piper
Live Entertainment

Coming a bit late to the party when it comes to dog-cop movies (released 6 years after Turner & Hooch and K-9), Top Dog stars martial arts action legend Chuck Norris. Alongside Chuck is Reno, a kind of herding dog called a Briard. The unlikely duo set out to thwart the plans of some neo-Nazi bad guys.

A group of white supremacists intend to blow up public places and it is up to rugged cop Chuck Norris and his new canine partner to put an end to it. Full of Norris’ signature ass kickings and cop movie clichés. Reno is the star here though, easily outshining his co-star, as movie dogs often do.

This film was aimed towards a more family audience, which makes the decision to feature neo-Nazi domestic terrorism a strange one.

9 days before the release of Top Dog, the very real Oklahoma bombing occurred, where white supremacists blew up a public building. 168 people were killed and almost 700 others injured. Given the similarities, it was hard for the producers and marketing to separate the film from the act of terrorism in the minds of movie-goers. This may be one the reason its release was quiet, and the movie so quickly forgotten.
