10 Painfully Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Movies
1. Sunshine (2007)
If you were to rate a film on visual spectacle alone, Sunshine would be one of the most critically praised films of all time as it is drop-dead gorgeous from the first reels to the last.
Following a team of scientists sent on a mission to reignite our dying sun, the film is dripping in atmosphere with the quiet isolation of space and deliberate pacing allowing the massive set-piece moments to feel as grand as they look.
It's a terrific mash-up of the two genres to create a very unique sci-fi film, with a ton of crazy realistic space-science being paired with gloomy gothic horror. The underlying tension with the weight of their mission hanging over the crew, along with a lot of mind-bending twists and catastrophes they must deal with, is palpable.
There's a dynamite cast of well-known actors who kill it in their roles too, with Chris Evans being as charming as ever in a very early role that hints at the massive star that would emerge.
The 3rd act is a rather abrupt change of pacing and introduces some questionable plot choices, but it also gives way to some surreal, horrific imagery and the last crescendo of plot threads crashing into one another is undeniably thrilling.
Sunshine seems to be overlooked as a solid if unremarkable flick, but few films contain the ambition and character it possesses.
This is one that not only fans of the sci-fi genre should miss out on, but fans of cinema in general.
