10 Painfully Underrated Sci-Fi Horror Movies

2. Alien: Covenant (2017)

Alien: Covenant got ripped apart by fans post-Prometheus who were desperate to see the franchise return to its former glory. While it couldn't quite match the bar the masterpieces before it had set, this is still a great sci-fi horror movie.

The first third of the film is pretty much pitch-perfect with a fantastic pace where the terror constantly builds in heart-pounding tension. The new Neomorph creatures then come out to play with one hell of an entrance that rivals the most horrifying moments the franchise has to offer.

Michael Fassbender's chilling and complex portrayal of the megalomaniac android David is also one of the most criminally underrated villains of the 2010's. His story descends into downright disturbing territory, while also containing brilliant pieces of reflection on the never-ending debate of biology versus technology.

While the third act goes on for a little too long and seems to revert back to what fans wanted to see less off, it's not so bad as to tarnish what came before it. Everything also ends on a creepy as sin cliffhanger to set up another installment.

Covenant is an absolutely gorgeous film with highly memorable moments of not only brutal horror, but beautiful science fiction too. If the third act was better fitting it might have actually been a praised much more like the comeback for the franchise it begged to be.

Whether you are a fan or not, give Covenant another chance and you will probably be surprised just how effective it is.
