Still one of the most genuinely unsettling and terrifying films ever made, there has never been a more important paranormal horror movie to watch than The Exorcist. Pushing the boundaries on how the Christian religion and its practices were portrayed on the big screen, the direction of William Friedkin behind the camera and the addition of some killer special effects proved to be the recipe needed for a winner.

The tale of Regan MacNeil and her family, The Exorcist revolves around the 12 year old girl being possessed by a demonic entity. From the spider-walking down the stairs, the creepy demonic voice and disgusting face consuming Regan, to the bed straight up floating during the pastor's exorcism, so many scenes from the film have gone onto become some of the most famous in all of cinema history.

The release of The Exorcist also triggered something of a cultural hysteria at the time of its release. There was a huge ratings controversy surrounding the film's release and, whilst initial reviews for The Exorcist were good enough, the reception for theatres showing the film were described as being like 'hell breaking loose', which is definitely a good thing when it comes to paranormal horror movies.
