10 Paranormal Horror Movies You Need To See Before You Die

2. The Blair Witch Project

The film that basically revived an entire genre of filmmaking with its found footage premise, The Blair Witch Project went out of its way to become arguably the most influential independent ever made. Taking advantage of new technologies to launch an ambitious viral marketing campaign that included a fake site and a whole bunch of fake accounts about the fate of its actors, Blair Witch was the film to see back in 1999.

The story of three students, Heather, Mike and Josh, who trek out into the woods of Maryland to document the legend of the Blair Witch, the film uses its frantic and messy found footage style to ramp up the scares by showing audiences the effects of the unknown and the paranoia on the characters right as they happen.

The sheer amount of influence and fame this film has should be reason enough to give it a watch, but, beyond that, it still remains one of the genuinely creative horror flicks released over the past twenty years or so. In comparison to the cheesy slashers and Scream-influenced meta releases that were everywhere in the '80s and '90s, Blair Witch was a force unlike any other and its influence would go onto become just as impressive in the years following its release.
