10 Paranormal Horror Movies You Need To See Before You Die
6. The Witch
One of the more unique entries to have come out of the paranormal part of the horror world in recent times, Robert Eggers' The Witch is an atmospheric suspense-fest that delivers one of the most interesting peeks into the day to day hardships of living in the Puritan New World.
Exploring themes ranging from old folklore and witchcraft, to old interpretations of Christianity, The Witch goes all out with its continuity by going to great lengths in ensuring everything from the costumes to the dialogue are all accurate to the time.
The story follows William and his family, New England settlers who were expelled from their Puritan settlement following a disagreement over their interpretation of faith. They establish a homestead on the edge of an eerie forest, where things naturally begin to go array for the family.
The attention to detail both in front of and behind the camera is really what sells the atmosphere of The Witch, and it's effectiveness is pretty chilling. The tone and overall depth of the film is also surprisingly weighty for a paranormal horror film, making for a pleasant change of pace from what most are probably used to from the genre.
