6. Akira Kurosawa
Nomination and Year: Best Director: Ran (1986) From one legendary director to another, next on the list is The Emperor, Akira Kurosawa. Growing up in Japan, Kurosawa was influenced by the westerns of John Ford. The cinematic tribute to his idol came full circle in Kurosawas case with three of his films (
The Outrage,
Seven Samurai and
Yojimbo) being remade into westerns. Other significant works in his expansive filmography include the wonderfully innovative
Rashomon and the epic
Ran, for which he received his only Oscar nomination. However perhaps it is not so surprising that Kurosawa never won an Oscar. One of the criticisms of the Academy Awards is that it seems to pay lesser attention to films which require subtitles. Though the award for Best Foreign Language Film was introduced in 1956, the vast majority of winners are from Europe. Only six recipients of the award have been from Asia. And it is
extremely rare that these films will be put forward for the Best Picture category. But this is a different issue altogether. Despite being somewhat overlooked by The Academy during the peak of his career, in 1990 they gave him the recognition he deserves. Kurosawa received the honorary award for cinematic accomplishments that have inspired, delighted, enriched and entertained worldwide audiences and influenced filmmakers throughout the world.
