7. Alfred Hitchcock
Nomination and Year: Best Director: Psycho (1961) Best Director: Rear Window (1955) Best Director: Spellbound (1946) Best Director: Lifeboat (1945) Best Director: Rebecca (1941) Its probably common knowledge that despite being one of the most influential directors to have graced the earth with his heavenly presence, Hitchcock never won an Oscar. But its worth reiterating just how absurd this seems. Even receiving a total of 5 nominations (a princely sum by any directors standards) seems a rather measly amount given the cinematic legacy he left in his wake. However in 1968 he was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, an accolade reserved for those whose bodies of work reflect a consistently high quality of motion picture production. Despite an Oscar-less career, Hitchcocks name will forever be engraved into the halls of cinema fame. He is portrayed by Anthony Hopkins in the recent release
Hitchcock which looks at the turbulent production process of his timeless classic
Psycho.
