10 Perfect Movies That You've Never Heard Of
7. Happiness - 1998
If you are able to handle disturbing, unflinching, thematically dark movies, you might want to check Happiness out. I will say this movie is not for everyone, and that's okay.
Yes, the film is called Happiness, but that is just for ironic purposes - much like a lot of this movie, with an off-kilter visual style that simultaneously fits the story and completely juxtaposes it.
The movie follows the Jordan family as they try desperately to find eudaemonia while experiencing the maliciousness of mankind. Mother and Father - Mona and Lenny - are living through a loveless marriage. Eldest sister Trish is married to a deeply disturbed man, completely oblivious to his evil nature. Helen, the middle sister, seemingly has everything, yet feels unfulfilled in her life while her neighbour obsesses over her from afar. Meanwhile the youngest sister, Joy, is directionless and naïve to the world around her.
The themes of the movie are brutal and hard-hitting, and the audience is left at the ending scene unsure whether to laugh or cry at its insanity. A movie that is completely overlooked, and worth a viewing... if you can stomach it.
