10 Perfect Psychological Horror Movies You've Never Heard Of

5. Unsane

It's a pity Steven Soderbergh's Unsane is mainly known for being "the movie that was shot on an iPhone", since it's so much more than a filming experiment.

This 2018 creepy thriller centres around a stalked woman, Sawyer (Claire Foy), who's involuntarily committed to a psychiatric institution. Believing she's delusional, the administrators refuse to listen to anything Sawyer says. When she suspects her stalker has snuck into the facility, Sawyer is forced to take matters into her own hands.

Despite being shot in ten days with a micro-budget, Unsane is enthralling thanks to the solid script and focus on atmosphere. Although there are some twists, they are never obvious or formulaic - anyone expecting the "she was really crazy all along" revelation will be relieved to learn it doesn't go down that avenue - and Unsane also boasts a remarkable cast, including Jay Pharaoh, Juno Temple, Colin Woodell, Zach Cherry, and Matt Damon.

Of course, it's the leading star's performance that makes everything work here, with Foy totally selling the frustration and desperation of the character and making her extreme circumstances surprisingly relatable.

The presentation may sound gimmicky, but there's no doubt Unsane is among Soderbergh's finest work.
