10 Perfect Psychological Horror Movies You've Never Heard Of
2. Thesis
The Others may be Alejandro Amenbar's most well-known horror, but his directorial debut is arguably better and more terrifying.
Thesis focuses on university student Angela, who's writing an academic paper on how people are drawn and attracted to violence. In her research, she discovers a snuff film of a student who went missing in Angela's school two years earlier, and as Angela uncovers more horrifying truths, her entire life is turned upside-down.
Even though Thesis has a myriad of stereotypes, the Spanish thriller reinvents them in a way so they never feel trite. It also dissects and mocks the horror genre, subtly referencing how oversaturated and indulgent the film industry is, celebrating cinema while simultaneously criticising it. Amenbar deconstructs the film medium in such a profound way, it's hard to believe he crafted this masterpiece when he was only 24.
Rest assured, though, this is a horror flick, so there's still scores of scares and gore to be had. But since Amenbar spends so much time breaking down the very concept of horror, the blood-soaked violence is sure to be viewed in a new light.
