3. Johnny Depp - Black Mass

Johnny Depp's endless catalogue of characters, while all profoundly different, all share one thing: they're all very transformative. From The aptly titled Mad Hatter In Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland reboot to the beloved Jack Sparrow, each of the roles he undertakes is as batty as the last, often requiring hours of make-up and a dramatic flare to do each character justice.

The 2015 crime drama Black Mass had Depp once again back in the make-up chair, but this time as notorious gangster Whitey Bulger. Operating in New England in the late 20th century, Bulger quickly became one of the most feared men in the country, and second only to Osama Bin Laden on the FBI's ten most wanted fugitives list.

Depp would don a smorgasbord of prosthetics and piercing contact lenses to recreate the now deceased crime lord, and the chilling depiction that came from his now frightening face was a return to form for the actor after a slew of samey performances.

The difference in this role as opposed to outings as as Tonto in The Lone Ranger or Charlie Mortdecai was that it wasn't blissful wierdness. This time his role was stone-cold sinister, and Depp reveled in the role.
