Oscar buzz no doubt had something to do with the film's strong box office performance, whereas the high piracy rates are perhaps something to do with the enormous online popularity of star Jennifer Lawrence. Director and writer David O. Russell must have thought he was on to something good with the cast for this film, re-teaming with both Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence on the recently released American Hustle. Whilst the budget for Hustle is almost twice that of Playbook and so making such a huge profit it less likely, the film is holding its own very well against heavy competition from big Christmas releases.
