7. Nygma Makes A Bold Decision
Jim Carrey's performance in Batman Forever gets a lot of undue hate. Yes, the character was a mugging goon, and it was something of a betrayal of the enduringly popular image of The Riddler as a grand puppet-master with supreme intellect, and not just viscious jealousy with a strange under-current of a spurned lover, but Carrey pulled off what was required of the brief perfectly. It's key to remember that Carrey earned the role thanks to his performance in Ace Ventura: today most fan castings for The Riddler would choose a menacing, dark actor with a spark of intelligence and probably an indie slant, but back then the image of what the Riddler should be was markedly different, and Warner Bros pulled off exactly what they intended. And while restraint isn't exactly something you could accuse Carrey of in the role, his physical performance - which culminated in his eye-wateringly tight cat-suit and interesting hair style - was originally intended to go a little further, as a mark of Nygma's commitment to his new identity. Carrey had originally intended to shave a question mark into his scalp, as an indication of that complete transformation (and his character's lunacy) - since he wouldn't exactly have been able to hide it in public. Unfortunately the idea was scrapped because Carrey was due in court to finalize his divorce, and apparently judges don't look favourably on silly hair cuts.
