If you know much about the behind-the-scenes of the Lord of the Rings movies, you'll probably be aware that Aragorn actor Viggo Mortensen is a huge fan of J.R.R. Tolkien's source novels, and that extended to turning down what would've surely been a hefty payday to make a cameo in Peter Jackson's Hobbit prequels.

In the early stages of production, producers approached Mortensen to reprise the Aragorn role in some form, and appreciating how much of an epic dramatic reach it'd be to place his character in the movies, he simply turned it down.

In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Mortensen said:

"Before they started shooting, back in 2008, one of the producers did ask if I would be interested. I said, 'You do know, don't you, that Aragorn isn't in The Hobbit? That there is a 60-year gap between the books?'"

And that was seemingly enough to kill the conversation dead, given how awkward it would've been to try and have Mortensen convincingly play a much younger Aragorn in a story he wasn't originally present in.

But with the Rings universe going through an aggressive expansion as of late, Mortensen has recently expressed an interest in reprising the role of Aragorn - presumably only if the idea makes more sense than this, though.
