10 Popular Horror Movies That Really Weren't Scary At All
8. The Conjuring
James Wan's Conjuring movies are pretty much what an algorithm-designed blueprint for a contemporary successful studio horror movie looks like: technically competent, loaded with talented actors and...not scary at all.
Much like It, the original Conjuring film exists as an undemanding rollercoaster ride of sorts. You know the movie isn't going to take you anywhere too challenging, you'll jump a few times, and the terror will eventually be defeated (for now). Done.
The film was deemed "too scary" for a PG-13 rating, yet for all but the most undemanding audiences, most of the jumps can be seen coming a mile off, and the set-pieces, no matter how well-constructed, are telegraphed far in advance.
More lightly suspenseful than scary in any way that truly sticks with the viewer, The Conjuring delivers fun thrills within the safe parameters of a tame studio horror movie framework. That's not a bad thing, but is it scary? Nope.
