10 Popular Horror Movies That Really Weren't Scary At All
4. Dawn Of The Dead
George A. Romero's 1978 undead classic is one of the most iconic horror films of all time, a deliciously entertaining consumerist satire packed with compelling characters and insane gore.
But for all of the things that Dawn of the Dead is, it isn't one thing, and that's scary.
Despite the overwhelming intensity of the zombie horde, Dawn of the Dead's oddly lightweight tone combines with goofy makeup effects - especially by modern standards - to flatten the film's tone and ensure that, despite its brilliance, it doesn't raise the pulse much.
This is a film where the "terrifying" zombies get pie-faced, after all. But Dawn of the Dead endures for so many more reasons, namely its unique setting for the genre, the accompanying social satire and those incredibly well-aged gore effects.
In fact, the opening 10 minutes of Zack Snyder's remake boast more genuine fear and intensity than the entirety of Romero's film, even if this original is decisively better in almost every other way.
