The Theory

Negasonic Teenage Warhead's (Brianna Hildebrand) girlfriend Yukio (Shioli Kutsuna) is introduced in Deadpool 2, and though Yukio is a Japanese ninja assassin in the X-Men comics, this version's age and general characterisation couldn't be much further from her comic book counterpart.

Given that Deadpool 2's Yukio is able to harness electricity, many fans felt that she was actually a re-imagined version of the X-Men superhero Surge, a theory compounded by their more convincing physical similarity.

How It Was Debunked

One of the film's writers, Rhett Reese, confirmed in an interview that what you see is what you get with Yukio.

He said, "That's not right. She's a super-minor character. The character's name is actually Yukio, an assassin -- but who's an adult assassin, so we just aged her down. She's such a minor character, we thought we could pretty much get away with anything."

There you have it - they didn't really care about adapting her faithfully because, let's be honest, she's a pretty throwaway character in the movie.
