The Theory

Ever since the release of Guardians of the Galaxy, writer-director James Gunn has claimed that there's still one Easter egg referencing classic Marvel Comics that fans haven't yet uncovered.

Gunn has periodically taken to Twitter to shoot down game guesses, insisting that some have gotten close and even partially uncovered it, but nobody's yet cracked the entire thing.

But last summer, the Internet was convinced they had the mystery solved after a fan discovered what appeared to be a Galactus "cameo" in the scene where The Collector (Benicio del Toro) explains the history of the Infinity Stones.

One brief series of images shows a towering entity holding a staff which bears a significant resemblance to Galactus' iconic helmet. It was a solid attempt, right?

How It Was Debunked

Gunn received enough messages from enthusiastic fans about the apparent Easter egg that he offered an official response on Twitter, insisting that the iconic supervillain "[isn't] there in any way."

You sure about that, James? That staff sure does look like Galactus' distinctive helmet. But as ever, the Word of God must win out.
