10 Post-Apocalyptic Films That Prove Mankind Is Doomed

6. Snowpiercer (2013)

Have you ever watched something and been unable to tell if it€™s a thriller or comedy? Whatever the case, this oddity from Bong Joon-ho is his first foray into English-speaking films and it€™s hugely entertaining and has all the makings of a cult classic. The film takes place aboard the globe-spanning Snowpiercer train, a massive wagon powered by perpetual motion, which holds the last remnants of humanity after a manufactured attempt to stop global warming created a new ice age. Got all that? You might want to repeat that back to yourself as its a hell of a lot to take in. The narrative follows Curtis, a working-class passenger at the tail of the train lead a revolt against the aristocratic elite at the front. It€™s a carriage-by-carriage blow by blow account of this uprising filled with bizarre characters and stranger scenes. Tilda Swinton€™s role as Minister Mason is certainly one of the comic highlights, she describes her character as a pick-and-mix of €œmonstrous and maniacal political clowns€ from Hitler to Margaret Thatcher, overlaid with an Alan Partridge buffoonery and Yorkshire accent. The film ends with the destruction of the train and the few surviving inhabitants walking out in the Winter wasteland - the fact that life does exist outside the train (in the shape of a cuddly polar bear) somehow doesn€™t fill the viewer with hope for the future of mankind.
