10 Post Apocalyptic Films You Need To See
4. Spacehunter: Adventures In The Forbidden Zone
Set mostly on Terra 11, a barren wasteland ruled by pasty-faced mutant Overdog (Michael Ironside), Spacehunter was released in 3D to exploit the medium’s resurgence in popularity, so objects are constantly being thrust at the viewer. It was also Canada's first big bucks movie to attempt to fuse Star Wars and Mad Max into a single narrative.
Wolf (Peter Strauss), who in no way resembles Han Solo, is cruising through the galaxy when he learns of the reward offered for the safe return of three women who’ve crashed on Terra and because he has alimony payments, rent arrears and 165 parking tickets, he accepts. He then runs into Washington (Ernie Hudson), who in no way resembles Lando Calrissian, and Niki (Molly Ringwald), who might’ve been intended as a Princess Leia-type but comes across more like Chewbacca – every time she opens her mouth, you want to cover your ears.
Until their climactic encounter with Overdog, our heroes fight off Terra 11’s residents, which include Amazon women, mutant children with Molotov cocktails and stunt performers in fat suits. In plot terms, that’s pretty much all she wrote, but while Spacehunter may lack Return of the Jedi’s epic scale, you won’t see any Ewoks either.
