10 Potential Film Franchises Perfect For A Female Star

2. Tomb Raider

Tomb Raider Gemma Arterton Not just one of the best known female video game characters of all time, but one of the great video game icons of any gender, Lara Croft has, of course, had a couple of big screen tomb raiding adventures before now. The casting of Angelina Jolie, just about the only star in Hollywood with a body that looks right for the part along with Oscar winning acting talent, was just about the only thing that the previous two Tomb Raider films got right. Nevertheless, there's plenty of mileage left in this kind of action adventure story. With developers Crystal Dynamics releasing a rebooted version of the game exploring Lara's origins earlier this year, now would seem like the perfect opportunity to do the same with the film franchise. How likely is it? This one is actually in active development. GK Films, who worked on Argo and World War Z, announced back in 2011 that they had acquired the rights to a Lara Croft origin story. Earlier this year, GK struck a deal with MGM to produce the movie jointly meaning that it is now in the early stages of pre-production. Regular Buffy writer Marti Noxon is currently penning the screenplay for a film that we could be watching as soon as 2015. Who should star? If the Agent Carter role doesn't pan out into anything long term, Hayley Atwell has voiced her interest in playing Lara after an online campaign backing her for the part. At 31 she may be a little old for a rebooting young version of the character, as would another popular choice Emily Blunt (again), but otherwise has the talent and style to fit the part pretty well. A few years younger, Gemma Arterton has done the video game movie action girl thing in the actually-better-than-you-think Prince of Persia and should be capable of providing both the posh Brit and tough action star elements of the character.
