3. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is one of the more divisive recent adaptations of a famed novel, which isn't too surprising given the high regard that Douglas Adams' surreal sci-fi tome is held in. Nevertheless, with its $50 million budget and cast including Sam Rockwell, Zooey Deschanel, Martin Freeman, Alan Rickman, Bill Nighy and John Malkovich, it certainly had a lot going for it. The film opened to mixed-to-positive reviews, which given the fanboyism surrounding Adams' series, isn't too bad at all, and it earned over double its budget at the box office. However, this wasn't considered enough to rouse studio interest in a sequel - its satirical weirdness no doubt turned more causal audiences off - and lead Martin Freeman confirmed in 2007 that it almost certainly wasn't going to happen. Given that Freeman is now keeping himself busy with The Hobbit trilogy, consider it even less likely. When we remember that Adams had written five Hitchhiker's books prior to his death, it's a real shame that we didn't get the opportunity to see more of his genius show up on the big screen.
